How to define a wholesale wheat requirement

A useful wheat enquiry converts a broad commodity name into measurable commercial and technical terms.

REVDICO is an independent commodity broker. This article provides general commercial guidance for substantial wholesale transactions; it is not an offer, confirmation of inventory or substitute for transaction-specific legal, technical or financial review.

Start with end use and grade

Milling wheat and feed wheat are not interchangeable labels. The intended use influences protein, gluten, falling number, test weight, moisture, foreign matter and other tolerances. A buyer should state the applicable specification or provide a complete parameter schedule.

If alternatives are acceptable, the permitted range should be identified. A supplier proposing a substitute grade should explain the difference instead of assuming that a lower or different specification will work for the buyer’s mill or feed formulation.

Quantity and programme

State the shipment size, total programme and frequency. A single trial cargo, monthly vessel programme and containerised order attract different counterparties and cost structures. Headline annual demand without a lifting schedule is difficult to assess.

The quantity should fit the proposed route, loading facility and receiving capacity. Buyers should understand discharge rates, storage and inland movement; suppliers should avoid quoting volumes unsupported by production, aggregation or logistics.

Origin, crop year and condition

Origin and crop year can affect quality profile, tariff treatment, sanitary requirements and buyer acceptance. Storage history, pest control and fumigation may also be relevant. These facts should be stated accurately and supported at the appropriate stage.

Weather and harvest conditions change between seasons. Representative analysis can guide discussion, but final contractual quality should be tied to an agreed lot, sampling method and inspection point.

Delivery basis and logistics

The port or inland delivery point, Incoterm, shipment window and transport mode belong in the initial requirement. Freight, port restrictions, demurrage and seasonal congestion can outweigh a seemingly attractive origin price.

The parties should clarify who charters transport, arranges export and import formalities, appoints inspectors, pays insurance and bears risk at each stage.

Documents and inspection

A wheat transaction may require quality and weight certificates, certificate of origin, phytosanitary certificate, fumigation record and transport documents. Destination requirements should be checked before contracting.

Sampling must be representative and the contract should address tolerances, rejection, price adjustment and dispute mechanisms. Documents should correspond to the actual cargo rather than being circulated without context.

Commercial qualification

A serious enquiry identifies the legal buyer, authorised contact, funding or payment expectations and receiving capability. A serious supply proposition identifies the seller, authority, origin, realistic availability and loading basis.

REVDICO may ask for clarification before considering an introduction. Vague claims, copied documents, impossible pricing or unexplained intermediary chains can prevent progress.

Turn the specification into a workable wheat enquiry

Before approaching a counterparty, confirm the wheat grade, measurable tolerances, shipment size, destination, delivery window and inspection basis. These details determine which origins and logistics options are commercially relevant.
